This is portfolio of Alex Prager. A talented artist live and work in Los Angeles. Cinematography is the making of lighting and camera choices when recording photographic images for the cinema. It is closely related to the art of still photography. Many additional issues arise when both the camera and elements of the scene may be in motion, though this also greatly increases the creative possibilities of the process. Cinematography can begin with rolls of film or a digital image sensor. Advancements in film emulsion and grain structure have provided a wide range of available film stocks. The selection of a film stock is one of the first decisions they must make during any film production.

Ballpoint pens can be an excellent medium for serious fine art or illustration. An obvious advantage is precision and control. With pens you can achieve very tight renderings. However that’s not all they can do. Ballpoint pens can also be used to express any mood, thought, theme or subject matter. Rendering does not need to be precise to accomplish good works with this medium.

In recent years, the ballpoint pen has become a popular medium for professional artists as well as amateurs. The instrument offers immediacy of results with little or no preparation required, along with portability and relative low price. Point size and ink characteristics such as lightfastness and opacity are considerations in choosing a make and model of pen.

Using Ballpoint Pens For Art

Most artists start their compositions with a sketch or a series of sketches. This helps them visualize and plan the art work. Painters transfer a copy of the sketch they are using to canvas or watercolor paper using pencil or charcoal. For ballpoint pen drawings start with a light pencil outline drawing on watercolor paper.

It is important to use a good quality heavy weight paper like watercolor paper when you begin your art work. In my earlier drawings I used light weight drawing papers and  the paper developed ripples that were clearly visible when the drawings were scanned. The is because as you work you will go over an area many times and this causes the paper to warp and stretch leaving you with ripples.

Do not shade your pencil sketch, the graphite gets mixed onto the ballpoint pen nib clogging your pen and muddying your ink colors. Once your outline is down, go over it very lightly with your ballpoint pen. Then erase the pencil lines. You can use graphite with pen as a mixed media side by side or after the ballpoint ink is down but not as an under drawing to the ballpoint pen ink.

Practice using your ballpoint pens. We tend to think that ballpoint pens can’t create a variety of lines. This is because we usually use them the same way on the same paper every time we write. The same pen can give you different lines depending on how you use it especially when you use a thicker softer paper. First try pressing down hard to get a dark firm line.  Next try using a lighter pressure to get a thinner lighter line.  Also important to practice for using ballpoint pens in art work are the curve or lack of curve in your lines.  A series of parallel curved lines can help build contour and will add depth to your work. Small blocks of  short parallel lines will give you a flat looking area with a lot of texture.

Don’t try to color areas in as if you are using crayons, instead use a crosshatching technique and build your color in layers. Solid ballpoint ink becomes a dead issue if you try to draw back into it; so be sure that’s what you want in your drawing before you do it. It takes patience but crosshatching will give you the opportunity to change colors and create shading and texture. Save any solidly colored areas for last. This gives you the freedom to change your mind.

With light parallel strokes, draw in the base color of each region in the drawing. This is similar to blocking in colors in an oil or acrylic painting and adding details or shading on top of that. Although I have not tried it yet it is possible to tone an area of paper with another medium before beginning to ink it. The choices however, are limited. You can’t use anything chalky which can clog your ballpoint pens and smear. You can’t use anything waxy like crayons because the inks must make contact with the paper and again the wax can clog your ballpoint pen. That leaves markers or watercolors. Try using them in a even coat without saturating the paper. Using an under color can represent the final ink color or be another color designed to tone, enhance, or change your final color. Work from lightest to darkest by adding layers of ink over the base color. The lightest areas may have only one layer of ink the base color by its self, but darker areas may have five or six. Change your stroke directions for each layer of ink. Remember what you practiced, using more or less pressure on a ballpoint pen has an effect on the amount of ink it deposits. Use more pressure in darker areas and less in light areas.

To get strong, interesting colors you will need to use many layers of ink. Colors can be modified by combining different ink colors. Work one color into the other with light strokes and change line directions to achieve a crosshatched texture. This will help blend the layers of color and ink more smoothly.

Depth and dimension can be created by careful shading. If you think of your drawing as being three dimensional and remember how light changes as it crosses a shape you will have more success portraying three dimensions. An added advantage of using ballpoint pen is that your shading lines need not be straight they can curve to help define the contour of an object.

Working in a very well controlled layer of black ballpoint ink will help to deepen shadows. Leave it subtle unless you want to accomplish a gloomy or darkened emotional component to your work. Highlight your deepest shadow areas with slightly exaggerated outlines and blend them in.

Japanese printmaking especially from the Edo period exerted enormous influence on Western painting in France during the 19th century.

The origins of painting in Japan date well back into Japan’s prehistoric period. Simple stick figures and geometric designs can be found on Jōmon period pottery and Yayoi period (300 BC – 300 AD) dotaku bronze bells. Mural paintings with both geometric and figurative designs have been found in numerous tumuli from the Kofun period and Asuka period (300-700 AD).

Japanese-style painting (nihonga) continues in a prewar fashion, updating traditional expressions while retaining their intrinsic character. Some artists within this style still paint on silk or paper with traditional colors and ink, while others used new materials, such as acrylics.

Many of the older schools of art, most notably those of the Edo and prewar periods, were still practiced. For example, the decorative naturalism of the rimpa school, characterized by brilliant, pure colors and bleeding washes, was reflected in the work of many artists of the postwar period in the 1980s art of Hikosaka Naoyoshi. The realism of Maruyama Ōkyo’s school  and the calligraphic and spontaneous Japanese style of the gentlemen-scholars were both widely practiced in the 1980s. Sometimes all of these schools, as well as older ones, such as the Kano school  ink traditions, were drawn on by contemporary artists in the Japanese style and in the modern idiom. Many Japanese-style painters were honored with awards and prizes as a result of renewed popular demand for Japanese-style art beginning in the 1970s. More and more, the international modern painters also drew on the Japanese schools as they turned away from Western styles in the 1980s. The tendency had been to synthesize East and West. Some artists had already leapt the gap between the two, as did the outstanding painter Shinoda Toko. Her bold sumi ink abstractions were inspired by traditional calligraphy but realized as lyrical expressions of modern abstraction.

Poseidon

Poseidon was the god of the sea, storms, and as “Earth-Shaker” of earthquakes in Greek mythology. The name of the sea-god Nethuns in Etruscan was adopted in Latin for Neptune in Roman mythology both were sea gods analogous to Poseidon. Linear B tablets show that Poseidon was venerated at Pylos and Thebes in pre-Olympian Bronze Age Greece, but he was integrated into the Olympian gods as the brother of Zeus and Hades. Poseidon has many children. There is a Homeric hymn to Poseidon, who was the protector of many Hellenic cities, although he lost the contest for Athens to Athena.

Aphrodite

Aphrodite is the Greek goddess of love, beauty, and sexuality. According to Greek poet Hesiod, she was born when Cronus cut off Uranus’ genitals and threw them into the sea, and from the aphros (sea foam) arose Aphrodite.

Because of her beauty other gods feared that jealousy would interrupt the peace among them and lead to war, and so Zeus married her to Hephaestus, who was not viewed as a threat. Her unhappiness in marriage caused her to frequently seek out the companionship of her lover Ares. Aphrodite also became instrumental in the Eros and Psyche legend, and later was both Adonis’ lover and his surrogate mother.

Aphrodite is also known as Cytherea (Lady of Cythera) and Cypris (Lady of Cyprus) after the two places, Cythera and Cyprus, which claimed her birth. Her Roman equivalent is the goddess Venus. Myrtles, doves, sparrows, horses, and swans are sacred to her. The Greeks identified the Ancient Egyptian goddess Hathor with Aphrodite.

Hestia

In Greek mythology Hestia (Roman Vesta), daughter of Cronus and Rhea is the virgin goddess of the hearth  and of the right ordering of domesticity and the family. She received the first offering at every sacrifice in the household. In the public domain, the hearth of the prytaneum  functioned as her official sanctuary. With the establishment of a new colony, flame from Hestia’s public hearth in the mother city would be carried to the new settlement. She sat on a plain wooden throne with a white woolen cushion and did not trouble to choose an emblem for herself.

Hephaestus

Hephaestus was a Greek god whose Roman equivalent was Vulcan. He is the son of Zeus and Hera (the King and Queen of the Gods). He was the god of technology, blacksmiths, craftsmen, artisans, sculptors, metals, metallurgy, fire and volcanoes. Like other mythic smiths but unlike most other gods, Hephaestus was lame, which gave him a grotesque appearance in Greek eyes. He served as the blacksmith of the gods, and he was worshiped in the manufacturing and industrial centers of Greece, particularly in Athens. The center of his cult was in Lemnos. Hephaestus’s symbols are a smith’s hammer, an anvil and a pair of tongs, although sometimes he is portrayed holding an axe.

Origami is the traditional Japanese folk art of paper folding, which started in the 17th century AD and was popularized in the mid-1900s. It has since then evolved into a modern art form. The goal of this art is to transform a flat sheet of material into a finished sculpture through folding and sculpting techniques, and as such the use of cuts or glue are not considered to be origami.

The number of basic origami folds is small, but they can be combined in a variety of ways to make intricate designs. The most well known origami model is probably the Japanese paper crane. In general, these designs begin with a square sheet of paper whose sides may be different colors or prints. Traditional Japanese origami, which has been practiced since the Edo era (1603–1867), has often been less strict about these conventions, sometimes cutting the paper or using nonsquare shapes to start with.

Modular origami, or unit origami, is a paperfolding technique which uses multiple sheets of paper to create a larger and more complex structure than would be possible using single-piece origami  techniques. Each individual sheet of paper is folded into a module, or unit, and then modules are assembled into an integrated flat shape or three-dimensional structure by inserting flaps into pockets created by the folding process. These insertions create tension or friction that holds the model together.

Technical origami, also known as origami sekkei is a field of origami that has developed almost hand-in-hand with the field of mathematical origami. In the early days of origami, development of new designs was largely a mix of trial-and-error, luck and serendipity. With advances in origami mathematics however, the basic structure of a new origami model can be theoretically plotted out on paper before any actual folding even occurs. This method of origami design was developed by Robert Lang, Meguro Toshiyuki  and others, and allows for the creation of extremely complex multi-limbed models such as many-legged centipedes, human figures with a full complement of fingers and toes, and the like.

The Art of caricature in magazines and news papers are very trendy these days. Some times they create controversies but the style and fun in these illustrations always make you laugh and its a very unique artwork to convey message or to tell something to this world in a different form. A caricature can refer to a portrait  that exaggerates or distorts the essence of a person or thing to create an easily identifiable visual likeness. In literature, a caricature is a description of a person using exaggeration of some characteristics and oversimplification of others.

Caricatures can be insulting or complimentary and can serve a political purpose or be drawn solely for entertainment. Caricatures of politicians are commonly used in editorial cartoons, while caricatures of movie stars are often found in entertainment magazines.

There have been efforts to produce caricatures automatically or semi-automatically using computer graphics techniques. For example, provides warping tools specifically designed toward rapidly producing caricatures. There are very few software programs designed specifically for automatically creating caricatures.

An interesting aspect of some computer graphic systems is that by necessity they require quite different skillsets to caricatures created on paper. Thus using a computer in the digital production of caricatures requires advanced knowledge of the program’s functionality. Rather than being a simpler method of caricature creation, it can be a more complex method of creating images that feature finer coloring textures than can be created using more traditional methods.

The science of caricature

Ramachandran and Hirstein suggested that caricature is related to peak shift. In the peak shift effect, animals sometimes respond more strongly to exaggerated versions of the training stimuli. For example, if a rat is trained to respond to a rectangle of a particular aspect ratio, and to avoid a square, when later presented with several rectangles it will prefer the one with the most elongated aspect ratio (this being the one that is most different from the square) rather than the original rectangle used in training. Ramachandran and Hirstein speculated that cells in a monkey brain that respond to particular faces would respond more strongly to caricatured versions of the face.

Nick Gentry is an artist and he is one of a very few people who still use the floppy discs to do the job. Well, he doesn’t use them to store the data but he uses them as a material for his interesting artworks. He recovers old and obsolete media storage and turns them into a medium for his expressive paintings. Gentry assembles obsolete tech materials into a workable canvas for his portraits, letting the shape and labels of the floppies peek through the painting to give character to the faces he paints. The writing on the labels are often left readable, provoking the viewer to wonder about the information trapped within.

Each piece starts with either some preparatory sketching of an imaginary person, or searching for images of faces. The features are then mapped into a grid, with each section the size of one disk. The disks are then placed in tonally appropriate areas (almost like pixels) to create a collage. On top of this, the outline of the head and the details are sketched in pencil, with oil paint to emphasise the features. This process is quite selective as only certain sections are finished completely. The unfinished aspect allows the viewer to see the layers, showing how the work has been created.

The personal information that exists inside of each disk is forever locked down underneath the paint. Mysteriously though, the handwritten labels on each disk are often left to show through, giving a clue as to what lies beneath. This is a reflection of online culture, where information is permanently stored, but with varying levels of access.

Graffiti is the name for images or lettering scratched, scrawled, painted or marked in any manner on property. Graffiti is any type of public markings that may appear in the forms of simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. Graffiti has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Greece and the Roman Empire. In modern times, spray paint, normal paint and markers  have become the most commonly used materials. In most countries, defacing property with graffiti without the property owner’s consent is considered vandalism, which is punishable by law. Sometimes graffiti is employed to communicate social and political messages. There are many different types and styles of graffiti and it is a rapidly developing artform whose value is highly contested, being reviled by many authorities while also subject to protection, sometimes within the same jurisdiction.

To some, it is an art form worthy of display in galleries and exhibitions, to others it is merely vandalism. Graffiti has since evolved into a pop culture existence often related to underground hip hop music and b-boying creating a lifestyle that remains hidden from the general public. Graffiti can be used as a gang signal to mark territory or to serve as an indicator or “tag” for gang-related activity. The controversies that surround graffiti continue to create disagreement amongst city officials/ law enforcement and graffitists looking to display their work in public locations.

Graffiti and graffito are from the Italian word graffiato (“scratched”). “Graffiti” is applied in art history to works of art produced by scratching a design into a surface. A related term is “graffito”, which involves scratching through one layer of pigment to reveal another beneath it. This technique was primarily used by potters who would glaze their wares and then scratch a design into it. In ancient times graffiti was carved on walls with a sharp object, although sometimes chalk or coal were used. The Greek infinitive γράφειν — graphein — meaning “to write” is from the same root.

Graffiti is often seen as having become intertwined with hip hop culture and the myriad of international styles derived from New York City Subway graffiti . However, there are many other instances of notable graffiti this century. Graffiti has long appeared on railroad boxcars and subways. The one with the longest history, dating back to the 1920s and continuing into the present day is Texino.

We can also consider him, one of the greatest graphic designer form the 14th century. If a man like Leonardo da Vinci lives in today’s world, you could imagine that how he  gonna use the software’s like photoshop or illustrator?

Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (About this sound pronunciation  (April 15, 1452 – May 2, 1519) was an Italian  polymath, painter, sculptor, architect, musician, scientist, mathematician, engineer, inventor, anatomist, geologist, cartographer, botanist and writer. Leonardo has often been described as the archetype  of the Renaissance man, a man whose unquenchable curiosity was equaled only by his powers of invention. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest  painters  of all time and perhaps the most diversely talented person ever to have lived. According to art historian Helen Gardner, the scope and depth of his interests were without precedent and “his mind and personality seem to us superhuman, the man himself mysterious and remote”. Marco Rosci points out, however, that while there is much speculation about Leonardo, his vision of the world is essentially logical rather than mysterious, and that the empirical methods he employed were unusual for his time.

Leonardo was not a prolific painter, but he was a most prolific draftsman, keeping journals full of small sketches and detailed drawings recording all manner of things that took his attention. As well as the journals there exist many studies for paintings, some of which can be identified as preparatory to particular works such as The Adoration of the Magi, The Virgin of the Rocks and The Last Supper. His earliest dated drawing is a Landscape of the Arno Valley, 1473, which shows the river, the mountains, Montelupo Castle and the farmlands beyond it in great detail.

Leonardo was and is renowned primarily as a painter. Two of his works, the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, are the most famous, most reproduced and most parodied portrait and religious paintings of all time, respectively, their fame approached only by Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam. Leonardo’s drawing of the Vitruvian Man is also regarded as a cultural icon,  being reproduced on everything from the Euro to text books to t-shirts. Perhaps fifteen of his paintings survive, the small number due to his constant, and frequently disastrous, experimentation with new techniques, and his chronic procrastination. Nevertheless, these few works, together with his notebooks, which contain drawings, scientific diagrams, and his thoughts on the nature of painting, comprise a contribution to later generations of artists only rivalled by that of his contemporary, Michelangelo.

The Vitruvian Man is a world-renowned drawing created by Leonardo da Vinci around the year 1487. It is accompanied by notes based on the work of the famed architect, Vitruvius. The drawing, which is in pen and ink on paper, depicts a male figure in two superimposed positions with his arms and legs apart and simultaneously inscribed in a circle and square. The drawing and text are sometimes called the Canon of Proportions or, less often, Proportions of Man. It is stored in the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, Italy, and, like most works on paper, is displayed only occasionally.

This image exemplifies the blend of art and science during the Renaissance and provides the perfect example of Leonardo’s keen interest in proportion. In addition, this picture represents a cornerstone of Leonardo’s attempts to relate man to nature.

The Last Supper is a 15th century mural painting in Milan  created by Leonardo da Vinci for his patron Duke Ludovico Sforza and his duchess Beatrice d’Este. It represents the scene of The Last Supper from the final days of Jesus as narrated in the Gospel of John 13:21, when Jesus announces that one of his Twelve Apostles would betray him.

Arguably, it is the most famous and iconic painting in the world.

Within Leonardo’s own lifetime his fame was such that the King of France carried him away like a trophy, and was claimed to have supported him in his old age and held him in his arms as he died. The interest in Leonardo has never slackened. The crowds still queue to see his most famous artworks, T-shirts  bear his most famous drawing and writers, like Vasari, continue to marvel at his genius and speculate about his private life and, particularly, about what one so intelligent actually believed in.

The famous art historian Bernard Berenson wrote in 1896  “Leonardo is the one artist of whom it may be said with perfect literalness: Nothing that he touched but turned into a thing of eternal beauty. Whether it be the cross section of a skull, the structure of a weed, or a study of muscles, he, with his feeling for line and for light and shade, forever transmuted it into life-communicating values.”

1. Hi Cristiano, welcome to VECTORTUTS! Please give us a brief background of yourself, tell us where you’re from, and how you got started in the field of digital arts? Did you take any formal training in this field?

Hi Vectortuts! It’s a pleasure to talk to you and thanks for the opportunity. I’m an Illustrator from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I work as a freelancer in my small home office in downtown of Sao Paulo. I make work for publishers, packaging design and advertising.

In digital arts, I started as soon as I started to work as designer. My formation is in traditional arts, but I’ve started in graphic design working with software like Illustrator and Photoshop. I didn’t have any formal training in software. Instead, I learned everything at work, with the help of work mates, books and the “help” of each software. I don’t know if I consider myself as “self-taught,” but I think I did that half of the way.

2. How long have you been vectoring for? What made you choose Illustrator and vector art as a medium to express your creativity? What other software do you use and what does your workstation look like?

I started with vectors in my first job. As I said above, I just started to use software when I started to work as a graphic designer. My task was to redraw logotypes in vector. They had lots of logotypes scanned from paper and I needed to make vector versions of them. So, the very first software I used to work was the Illustrator. It was the 7th version.

Using Illustrator almost everyday, I could get some practice with the Pen tool and other resources, so I realized I could make something with my hand drawing stuff in Illustrator too. I really enjoyed the perfect lines I could draw with the Pen tool, rather better than my skill to draw perfect lines by hand. I first started to ink my drawings in Illustrator and later I started to give them colors too.

Lately, I’ve been using Illustrator and Photoshop. Sometimes Poser to help with anatomy and lightning issues. My workstation is clean, a big table with few elements over it. Just the computer, a lamp, a calendar, a phone and some pens and pencils… sometimes the tablet…empty walls… just this.

3. You started with a traditional art background. How did it influence your work as a digital artist? When did you transit into working with Illustrator for your art pieces? Was it an easy transition? How is traditional art different from digital art, vector art in particular?

The knowledge that traditional art gave me was all the basic skills needed to develop my work in the digital environment. I could learn how to think first in the image before making it, plan the composition more, the light source, the shading, and how everything will work in the whole picture.

The transition from traditional techniques to digital happened when I started to work with graphic design and I started to work everyday with computer and graphic software programs. The transition was not easy and I had to change a little my way to work, adapting to the digital tools, trying to extract the best from both ways, digital and traditional and mix them all in the digital format.

The main difference between traditional and digital is that you can work with virtual materials. It means no dirt, no expenses and not having to be so dependent on good materials to make the best work. In traditional work, we need to find the best materials for each technique, a good paper for watercolor, good brushes and inks for oil and we need to be really skilled in handrawing to enjoy the max of the materials and not lose lots of time making corrections.

In digital you can simulate the effects of the traditional techniques, you don’t have dirt, you don’t need to be worried about papers or other materials, you don’t need to be an ace in handrawing because you have tools that helps you to make the perfect line, the perfect colors. In the standards of the graphic design industry, the digital works can fit very well in any printing process, you can prepare your file considering any printing process and optimize your work to the best result.

Anyways, the digital isn’t better than the traditional, it’s just different, and optimized for an application. Both (digital and traditional) are ways that people can express their feelings, messages, and communicate. They can provide the same products.
