Mosque architecture is a continuation of pre-Islamic architecture of palaces built during the Parthian and Sassanian dynasties of Persia. The Sarvestan  palace from the Sassanian  era is a great example of this. For example, the idea of having an arched entrance and a central dome is clearly one borrowed from pre-Islamic, Persian architecture. After the Arab invasion of Persia, this architecture, as well as elements of Sassanian culture, was used for the new Islamic world. Many forms of mosques have evolved in different regions of the Islamic world including those in southeast Asia. Notable mosque types include the early Abbasid mosques, T-type mosques, and the central-dome mosques of Anatolia. The oil-wealth of the twentieth century drove a great deal of mosque construction using designs from leading non-Muslim modern architects and promoting the careers of important contemporary Muslim architects.

The Ottomans introduced central dome mosques  in the fifteenth century. These mosques have a large dome centered over the prayer hall. In addition to having a large central dome, a common feature is smaller domes that exist off-center over the prayer hall or throughout the rest of the mosque, where prayer is not performed. This style was heavily influenced by the Byzantine religious architecture with its use of large central domes.

Iwan mosques are most notable for their domed chambers and iwans, vaulted spaces opening out at one end. In iwan mosques, one or more iwans face a central courtyard that serves as the prayer hall. The style represents a borrowing from pre-Islamic Iranian architecture and has been used almost exclusively for mosques in Iran.

Masks have been used since antiquity for both ceremonial and practical purposes. They are usually worn on the face, although they may also be positioned for effect elsewhere on the wearer’s body, so in parts of Australia giant totem masks cover the body, whilst Inuit women use finger masks during storytelling and dancing.

A lighthouse is a tower, building, or framework designed to emit light from a system of lamps and lenses or, in older times, from a fire and used as an aid to navigation  and to pilots at sea or on inland waterways.

Photographers always want to capture the lighthouses because of there beautiful architectural design and surroundings because these lighthouse generally located on hill sides or sea sides with a beautiful view around. Lets look at some of the most stunning lighthouses photographs for your inspiration.

To be effective the lamp must be high enough to be seen before the danger is reached by a mariner. The minimum height is calculated according to trigonometry by taking the square root of the height of a lighthouse in feet and multiplying it by 1.17 to yield the distance to the horizon in nautical miles.

Where dangerous shoals are located far off a flat sandy beach, the prototypical tall masonry coastal lighthouse is constructed to assist the navigator making a landfall after an ocean crossing. Often these are cylindrical to reduce the effect of wind on a tall structure, such as Cape May Light. Smaller versions of this design are often used as harbor lights to mark the entrance into a harbor, such as New London Harbor Light.

Most spectacular natural and manmade holes in the face of the earth. Some of these are the result of man’s search for mineral wealth, while some are nature’s work creating some astounding holes.

Darvaza – The Burning Gates

In 1971, geologists discovered a huge underground deposit of natural gas on this site. And while excavating, a whole drilling rig fell into an underground cavern. Natural gas started coming up from the hole. To prevent gasses from escaping, it was set alight and it continues to burn even today. The crater measures roughly 60 meters in diameter and 20 meters deep and is located in Turkmenistan.

Sinkhole  in Guatemala

These  photos are of a sinkhole that occurred early  this year in Guatemala . The hole swallowed a dozen homes and killed at least 3 people.

Diavik  Mine, Canada

The mine  is so huge and the area so remote that it has its own airport  with a runway large enough to accommodate a Boeing  737. It looks equally cool when the  surrounding water is frozen.

Mirny  Diamond Mine , Serbia

I’m  pretty sure most people have seen this one. It’s an absolute  beast and holds the title of largest open diamond mines in the  world. At 525 meters deep, with a top diameter of 1200 meters,  there’s even a no-fly zone above the hole due to a  few helicopters having been sucked in.

Great  Blue Hole , Belize

This  incredible geographical phenomenon known as a blue hole is  situated 60 miles off the mainland of Belize. There are  numerous blue holes around the world, but none as stunning as  this one.

Bingham  Canyon  Mine, Utah

This is  supposedly the largest man-made excavation on earth. Extraction  began in 1863 and still continues today, the pit increasing in size  constantly. In its current state the hole is ? miles deep and 2.5  miles wide.

Glory  Hole – Monticello Dam, California

This is  the ‘Glory Hole’ at Monticello dam, and it’s the largest in the  world of this type of spillway, its size enabling it to consume  14,400 cubic feet of water every second.

Kimberley  Big  Hole – South Africa

Apparently the largest ever  hand-dug excavation in the world, this 1097  meter deep mine yielded over 3 tons of diamonds before being closed in  1914.
