Apple has always been in news for its designs and technology. The credit for giving importance to the looks with technology goes to Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple. But even after him Apple is continuing on similar lines. From time to time people discuss about company’s new offerings and this time there is a lot being talked about its new flat Icon concept. At the first sight, the simplicity of this interface may confuse you and it is very hard to imagine something from Apple without the trademark glossy facing. But transition is the sign of growth and innovations; Apple too has just deviated from their sophisticated designs (I hope this will go in their favour).
Lot many things have been changed from the fonts to the icons, transition impacts and much more. I will primarily talk about the all new flat Icons in this post. All of which have been designed as per Apple guidelines. Over all icon’s size is 120×120 >114×114 and the Border radius is 27×27 >20×20.
The icons are quite improved from earlier version and the consistency looks good with the help of shadow effects. I liked the music icon; its design and the darker background are really cool.
Being a game lover I use the game icon a lot and the game centre icon in the new version is nice with bricks and the colourful design. You would love the looks of the mail and safari app icons with better design with shadow effects. It is noticeable that keeping the icons simple and flat a mode of consistency has been still maintained.
Photos app, Camera app and other in-app interfaces have been kept quite simple yet effective. The colour is restricted to black and white which looks nice and typography done is remarkable. If you look at the icons you would notice that the basic shape of the icons is more or less same as previous versions. Now icons are made flatter, cleaner and simpler which I believe makes the look more attractive and allow users to access the information in much simpler and easy way.
I really liked the flat icon concept introduced by Apple and believe this is the beginning of a much more modern and cleaner stuff by the company. The consistent feel is attractive and they have proved flat icons is not about taking away features like borders or shadows but it about making the interface more clean and consistent. It is about making the components soft and blend all those with the background to create an embedded effect.
This flat icon concept is a good change offered by Apple especially when market is flooded by several popular software(s). All I can say is “Change is good”. Keep Trying, Keep Exploring!
In the end, I have collected some great inspiring examples of Flat icons created by some good designers –
