It is not an easy task. Designing is not easy and neither is it easy to convince your clients to pay the desired amount for the excruciating job that is done by you. So, the question is how to convince them?
According to a research, people usually take just seconds to decide whether they like a website or not. It was concluded that the decision was made solely based on the overall design of the website.
While most web designers may argue that they are paid far less than what they deserve, they often fail to realize that customer satisfaction is the key to any big door. Having said that we often find ourselves at war when it comes to pitching our fee structure in front of our client. We have a desired amount in our mind, however the client may find it either ridiculous or way too exorbitant!
GIVE THE CLIENT WHAT THEY NEED
Good work, will pay off. Bad work, on the other hand, will bring nothing but disappointment. So, the first step in selling your services is not just assuring great work but also delivering it. How can you classify what is good or bad work? It is true that a design conveys a silent message. It is also true that no design is bad. Then what sets the barcode? The answer is hidden in the old yet popular phrase; “Give the client what they need, not what they want.”
Suppose if your client doesn’t want the color yellow, you are most likely not going to add the color in the design at all. However, if the situation or the design demands the color feel free to add. After having added you will have to explain your decision to your client in a way that he understands and appreciates your creativity and imagination.
COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY TO ALL PROBLEMS
You don’t really have to be chatty. Just talk to your clients and try to maintain a healthy yet substantial relationship with them. This will also help you when you take your independent decisions, as you will be able to explain them better because you know them personally.
Try to understand your client. Talk to your client and make a list of what he/she likes and dislikes. Take notes of what your client would like to add to his website. However, do not do a half-hearted job.
Buying advertisements in business and professional magazines is a wonderful idea. Not only would it assure you get higher paying and white collar clients but also your skills would be placed on a platform where people might pay you more than you had initially desired. Besides businessmen have friends and if your work is simply amazing then they could recommend you to other clients thus not only increasing your client database and improvising your talent but also getting a higher pay.
SHOW THEM WHAT’S YOUR WORTH
It is not about how talented you are. It is about how credible you are. Your talent is absolutely of no use unless you can actually direct it to the path which will let your clients and your potential clients know how credible and worthy you are. Make a collection of your impeccable and spell-bounding work and present it to your clients before you take the deal. You can also start a website of your own to show them your creativity. Make sure that you astound them with your work so that they cannot decide upon paying you even a single penny less than what you deserve.
CLIENTS HAVE CUSTOMERS
Clients have Customers, and it is for the customers that your clients come to you. Show them the mirror. Give your clients the customer’s perspective. Show them the difference between you and other designers. Help them explore new ideas about how your work will change their statistics because Customers like what they see.
IT IS NOT WHAT YOU HAVE, IT IS WHAT YOU CAN
How many times have you come across the same old designs and the same old color combinations? Now, your client have seen many websites before approaching you. Be different! Show your clients that you are not like the other designers. You are vibrant and you have talent.
Put your creativity to use and show your clients designs that they have never seen before. Even if the client has a specific design in his mind, challenge it with your unique, new designs.
Nothing is impossible, but only if you try. The clients may not understand you, but you can make an attempt to understand them. The fundamental trick here is to lure your clients with your work and get them to pay not a penny less than what you deserve!
