If this is your first time writing a blog, maybe you had the naive idea that you could simply run a search on Google images and lift whatever picture you could find on there for your posts.

Unfortunately, things aren’t that simple. Good images usually have professionals behind them, and they have the right to be compensated. So, if you want to find images that you can use free of charge, things will get difficult. You also have the choice of paying if you have the means and you feel it’s worth it. Either way, knowing where to find great images when you haven’t searched for images before can be confusing. Let’s take a look at how to find the best images for your blog.

General Guidelines

First, you have to know a few tips on how to search for the images that you want. You want to be as precise as possible when conducting searches. For instance, a search for “cute cat” will probably get
you thousands upon thousands of results, but something like “grey Siamese cat” will get you a narrower set of choices. Image sites will usually have many filters that will allow you to find better
images by narrowing down your set of criteria.

Another thing you can do is run a search on images from websites related to your niche. You then have public domain images. These are images that are older than 50 years old or created before 1923. You are free to use these in whichever way you want – you can even modify them – and you don’t have to pay or ask for permission from anyone.

What About Creative Commons Images?

These are a bit complex, but they make images much accessible. When using these, you have to pay special attention to the terms. While many creative commons images will allow you to do whatever you want with the image, many will have special terms. For instance, you may have to give the original author an attribution. Some will allow you to alter the image, and some won’t. So, make sure you read the fine print first.

Now that you know a bit more about images, you can start your search. The most important part is knowing your rights and the rights of the creators so that you don’t make a potentially costly mistake.
